Inquirer Entertainment: Angel Locsin no longer reprising role as ‘Darna’

Darna could never fly again.

Due to a health problem, actress Angel Locsin will no longer reprise her iconic superheroine title role in the upcoming Star Cinema movie “Darna.”

“Because of her passion and dedication and commitment to the project, she underwent various rigorous training regimens for two years. Unfortunately, this led her to developing a disc bulge in her spine,” said Kane Errol Choa, ABS-CBN’s Integrated Corporate Communications Head.

Choa said that because of Angel’s spinal disc problem, she won’t be able to perform demanding activities like stunts or liftings “which will be required of her for the action scenes in the film.”

Angel, who first played the Mars Ravelo comics character in 2005, will also need to undergo rehabilitation and treatment.

Last August, the 30-year-old actress had to be confined at a hospital because of severe back and leg pain.

ACTRESS Angel Locsin has no regrets doing strenuous activities for her job in the past that caused her to have a “bulging disc.”

In an interview with Boy Abunda on Monday night, Angel publicly broke the news that she has to give up her upcoming Star Cinema movie “Darna” as she was diagnosed with an injury to her intervertebral disc, where the disc bulges out between the vertebrae and presses on a nerve causing severe pain and numbness.

“Kapag may trabaho, binibigay ko talaga ‘yong best ko. Ganun ko kamahal ‘yong craft. ‘Yong role inaalagaan ko…so kapag may ni-require na mga stunts, ginagawa ko talaga lahat…iniiwasan ko gumamit ng double. Kasi gusto ko ipakita sa mga tao, ako ang binabayaran mo dito. Ako ang gagawa ng mga mahihirap na bagay,” Angel explained.

Philippine Star: Angel Locsin says giving up Darna 'really painful'

Angel Locsin said it was “painful” to give up the Star Cinema movie Darna.

“It’s really painful po, masakit po talaga na hindi ko magagawa ‘yong Darna,” Angel said in an interview with ABS-CBN's “Tonight with Boy Abunda” aired on Monday. “Kami po ng ABS-CBN nakapag-usap na kami, nakapag-decide na kami na mas makakabuti po sa lahat kung hindi ko na po gagawin ang Darna.”

The actress had to give up the project after she had a disc bulge on her spine, which was due to the trauma that her bones had after having a number of injuries in the past.
